The printing press was invented in Germany by the goldsmith and printer Johannes Gutenberg in 1447.

Printing methods based on Gutenberg's printing press spread rapidly throughout first Europe and then the rest of the world, replacing most block printing and making it the sole progenitor of modern movable type printing.

Did You Know?

Here's a neat bit of trivia: Do you know where the terms "upper case" and "lower case" come from?

It comes from the way printers (the people, not the machines) used to organize the typefaces that they used for their printing presses. The different metal letters that were used for printing were kept neatly in cases, so they could be immediately located when needed. Capital letters were kept in cases on top; other letters were kept in cases on the bottom.

The result? UPPER CASE and lower case.
